I’m a digital settler.
I grew up researching on microfiche, walking my fingers through a library index card, and finding my way around with a printed map. If you’re nodding your head in recognition, we’re probably on the same boat (or a digital immigrant.) If I lost you on “library index card”, then you’re most likely a digital native.
Digital natives grew up in a world where they have “access to networked digital technologies and the skills to use those technologies”, and as such, have never experienced a truly analog world without Facebook, smartphones, laptops, and apps. And google!
So it was with great interest that I watched this digital native go through a low-tech challenge where he was made to do 3 simple tasks with only a map book and an analog flip phone on hand.
The tasks were:
Task no.1: Drive to a location using a map book (no apps, no google)
Sans smartphone, it took him 8 minutes to find the location. With a googlemaps app, it would’ve taken him just 10 seconds to do the same thing.
Task no. 2: Research a simple question
Who is the most decorated WW2 American combat soldier? The kid found an older man who answered the question without looking it up online or referencing anything else, just his own working memory. It took him 32 minutes to answer what would ordinarily take you 10 seconds to google.
Task no. 3: Take Selfie and share with friends
Using an old school camera, it took him 2 hours 59 minutes to take a photo, have it developed, and share it with friends. Online? It would’ve taken a mere 10 seconds to do all that.
Whichever side of the equation you belong to – whether you’re a digital immigrant or digital native – this video will make you stop and think about how far technology has infiltrated our lives, mostly for the better.
Here’s the video: Could You Survive a Day Without Your Phone?
What do you think?
Maybe you and you smartphone are inseparable, and that’s that. No use “re-luddite-ifying” at this day and age of awesome tech gadgets at our disposal. Need an upgrade? We’ve got you covered. Take a look at our collection of smartphones in the shop.
